Biofuels became a major focus for oil suppliers around the last two decades of the twentieth century in their search for renewable energy sources. Through a series of bold and innovative research programs, the industrial sector managed to pinpoint a fuel that could be used responsibly and renewably without the worry of excessive pollution. The current generation of Bioheat fuel has such a low emission rate that it isn’t even covered under the Federal Clean Air Act anymore. But what exactly is Bioheat fuel?

Bioheat is a blended mixture of heating oil with other organic fuel sources such as corn, soybean oils, and even algae. The volume of renewables within the Bioheat mixture varies, and because of this, the fuel mixture tends to burn many times more efficiently than regular heating oil. The result is lower emissions as well as a more efficient heating solution that can be used at affordable prices.
How is Bioheat Produced?
The “Bio” in Bioheat comes from biodiesel, one of today’s sustainable energy sources that can be produced as a by-product of the creation of high-protein feeds and high quality meats. How biodiesel is produced is by utilizing a process called ‘transesterification’ which separates the glycerin in the residual product from the methyl esters. The final result is an output of glycerin (which is then used for manufacturing of soap and other detergents) and purified biodiesel which can then be mixed with regular heating oil to produce Bioheat fuels.
How is Bioheat Labeled?
On a Bioheat fuel tank, it’s likely to see numbers such as B5, B20 or some other variant thereof. The number after the letter B is the percentage of the biodiesel that is mixed with the heating oil. On average, most suppliers utilize B2 to B5 mixtures which offer between 2% and 5% of biodiesel. Other suppliers can offer as much as 20% (B20) to their customers, but these are usually rare occurrences. A B100 mixture is taken as pure biofuel and is almost never used in commercial Biofuel solutions.
